How to calculate Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index is a simple equation that takes into account a person's height and weight. In the formula, BMI is kg/m 2. where kg is the weight of a person in kilograms and M 2 can be their height as meters squared.

An BMI greater than 25.0 or higher is considered to be overweight and healthy comprises 18.5 to 24.9. BMI is applicable to the majority of adults aged 18 to 65 years old.

Who shouldn't use an BMI calculator

BMIis not recommended to build muscle, long distance athletes, pregnant women, the old or young children. This is because BMIdoes have to consider what percentage of the body weight carried as muscle or fat, just the amount. The people with the highest muscular mass, like athletes, might have a high BMI but not be at greater health risk. The people with a lower mass, such as children who aren't finished with their growth phase or who may be losing some muscle mass might have the lower BMI. As a woman is pregnant and lactating the body composition of women changes, which is why using BMI is not appropriate.
